Character Review – Cardan and Jude The Cruel Prince by Holly Black

Hey lovely readers!

It’s been a few days since my last post, but I just had to take the time to get my head straight! After reading The Cruel Prince by the amazing Holly Black I just did not know what to do with myself! But now that I’ve had time to think I realized I have so much to say. I thought about doing a book review, but I’ve seen so many already. So I just want to talk about these two characters. Lets get into it! SPOILERS!!! AHEAD!

I have to be honest, I had a hard time getting into the book at first. I started and stopped reading it like three times before I actually gave it my full attention. But once I really started paying attention I was hooked and I it’s all because of Cardan! I am a total sucker for a bad boy and Prince Cardan is truly awful! I tried so hard to hate him, bit when his secrets started to come out I was done for. I have read so many stories with a bad boy turned good, but what I love about this one is that Cardan doesn’t really seem redeemable at least at the end of this book. He seems determined to hate Jude and to keep being exactly who he has been all along. And I love that. Yes he is harsh and angry and nasty, but he has every right to be.

Usually I’m itching for the heroine to pull the tormented guy back from the darkness, but in this case I can see how that darkness might work for both Jude and Cardan. Because what I found most captivating about Cardan is that while he does behave atrociously he is not an inherently bad being. He is Fae and so I believe that allows for a certain amount of darkness to be there. And honestly I don’t want her to change him. If he wants to be kinder fine, but there is nothing wrong with him. I really love his character so much. And the way he is betrayed by Jude was pure agony, but also genius! I do hope that he eventually finds some happiness, whatever that means for him. In the end I hope he stays true to himself, I would love to see Jude discover herself through him.

Now on to Jude. Ugh I am so conflicted where she is concerned! I feel like I’m supposed to be rooting for her, but more often than not I wanted her not to succeed in whatever scheme she was concocting. I just felt that her choices were made because of her fears, and that never results in anything good. Case and point: her treatment of Cardan. At first I really did not like her, because I kept thinking why would she love Madoc? Why? And why does she want to ensure the survival of Farie? But then you throw Oak in the mix and it makes sense to me. Her love for him is what makes her redeemable, even though she betrays Cardan is the most disgusting way. At least that is how it looks to me. What I love about Jude is that she makes no apologies for how she has chosen to survive the life she was forced into. And unlike most “heroines” you can’t really be sure that she is going to do the right thing.

That has got to be the best thing about this book, it’s a role reversal of sorts. And it is not overly romantic. It is truly a slow burn, because it takes a bit for the twists to come along. But I think that’s what makes the story and the characters stand out. Because right now I’m loving the bad boy and am so angry at the girl, which is not how I usual feel with books like this. But perhaps that’s because I have never read a book this amazing! I have so many conflicting emotions and I’m loving it! There’s so much more I could say, but I have to stop now or I never will! So I hope you liked what I had to say and I would love to hear your thoughts as well! And remember, there’s a thin line between love and hate ❤

Thanks for reading guys! Talk to you soon! ❤ Adrianna
