Book Review – Little Monsters by Kara Thomas

Hey lovely readers!

Today’s post is a book review of Little Monsters by Kara Thomas! First a quick synopsis for you guys.

“Kacey is the new girl in Broken Falls. When she moved in with her father, she stepped into a brand-new life. A life with a stepbrother, a stepmother, and strangest of all, an adoring younger half sister. Kacey’s new life is eerily charming compared with the wild highs and lows of the old one she lived with her volatile mother. And everyone is so nice in Broken Falls—she’s even been welcomed into a tight new circle of friends. Bailey and Jade invite her to do everything with them.Which is why it’s so odd when they start acting distant. And when they don’t invite her to the biggest party of the year, it doesn’t exactly feel like an accident. But Kacey will never be able to ask, because Bailey never makes it home from that party.”

So ominous, I love it! Okay so I actually read this book months ago, but I wasn’t blogging then. Now that I am I have to talk about this book, because it is amazing. I won’t give away the ending, but I’ll do my best to make you want to find out what happens! Honestly the cover got me with this book and the fact that it takes place in wintery Wisconsin! The book begins with a possible murder, so you already know it’s going to be good. But when you delve deeper you really start to see that the story is about how much we really can’t know fully the people in our lives. Everyone has the potential to surprise and shock us.

Kacey is determined to find out what happened to Bailey and it leads her down a dangerous path. She has never really fit in with the other people in this small Wisconsin town. And she finds that even her other best friend Jade is certain that Kacey knows something about Bailey’s disappearance. What was so amazing to me about this book is that you really have no clue who might have harmed Bailey or if she just disappeared on her own. Did Kacey murder her out of jealously? Is a boy whom everyone loves responsible? Did Jade and Kacey really know Bailey at all? This book really sucks you in right from the beginning. The writing is so descriptive and truthful. You really get inside Kacey’s head, which for a story like this is so important.

Even though this is a story about solving a murder/disappearance you still find yourself relating to Kacey’s feelings of loneliness  and exclusion from her peers. You sympathize with her and root for her relationships with her family while still wondering did she do it? And then when you do find out what happened and who did it, it really breaks your heart when you understand why. My favorite thing about it is that I did not see the ending coming. That is extremely rare for me these days. Seriously this book is really genius in the way it makes you think and feel. Pick it up and I guarantee you won’t be able to put it down.
