Hey lovely readers!
Today’s post is a book review of Punk 57 by the amazing Penelope Douglas, and yes that is my expert opinion after only having read one of her books! Okay let’s get started!
“We were perfect together. Until we met.”
I can’t help but smile at the words in her letter. She misses me.
In fifth grade, my teacher set us up with pen pals from a different school. Thinking I was a girl, with a name like Misha, the other teacher paired me up with her student, Ryen. My teacher, believing Ryen was a boy like me, agreed.
It didn’t take long for us to figure out the mistake. And in no time at all, we were arguing about everything. The best take-out pizza. Android vs. iPhone. Whether or not Eminem is the greatest rapper ever…
And that was the start. For the next seven years, it was us. Her letters are always on black paper with silver writing. Sometimes there’s one a week or three in a day, but I need them. She’s the only one who keeps me on track, talks me down, and accepts everything I am.
We only had three rules. No social media, no phone numbers, no pictures. We had a good thing going. Why ruin it? Until I run across a photo of a girl online. Name’s Ryen, loves Gallo’s pizza, and worships her iPhone. What are the chances?
F*ck it. I need to meet her. I just don’t expect to hate what I find.
He hasn’t written in three months. Something’s wrong. Did he die? Get arrested? Knowing Misha, neither would be a stretch.
Without him around, I’m going crazy. I need to know someone is listening. It’s my own fault. I should’ve gotten his number or picture or something.
He could be gone forever.
Or right under my nose, and I wouldn’t even know it.”
Honestly I’m not even sure where to start with this book. I only heard about it a few weeks ago from Jess over at Peace Love Books . She’s a great booktuber, especially if you love romance like me! So I had no idea what to expect. All I knew is that she loved it and that was enough for me. Let me tell you it did not disappoint.
Ryen and Misha have been pen pals for years. And then one night Misha sees Ryen at a party, though he doesn’t tell her who is. That same night something pretty terrible happens in Misha’s life and he stops writing to Ryen. So the book tells the story of what happened to Misha after that night and how his and Ryen’s lives end up coming together. I will say that when these two are together the chemistry is freaking amazing even though they really can’t stand each other. Misha is a complete asshole to Ryen and Ryen gives as good as she gets. So be warned there is a bit of bullying.
But what I found so compelling about this story is why each person acts the way they do, why they lie and fake so many things. Ryen totally pissed me off for the like the first fifty pages. Like I wanted to hit her, actually they both pissed me off. But the thing is they are both justified in their actions. I mean seriously Penelope Douglas is really great at making you see the ugly in someone and yet making you love them anyway.
I will freely admit that this book made me cry and I never cry when reading books, never! But the emotions from these characters just leap off the page and into your heart. They both feel so strongly and so passionately. Misha is officially my new favorite book boy and in the end I truly admired Ryen for her bravery. And on a lighter note, the sex scenes in this book were phenomenally done, like some of the best I’ve ever read. I dare you not to become addicted to this book and this author. 😉 I gave this book a 5 out of 5 stars on Goodreads and I would absolutely read it again!
Thanks for reading guys! Talk to you soon! ❤ Adrianna
