Book Review – The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg

Hey lovely readers!

Today’s post is a book review on The Paper Magician by Charlie N. Holmberg

20727654 (1)“Ceony Twill arrives at the cottage of Magician Emery Thane with a broken heart. Having graduated at the top of her class from the Tagis Praff School for the Magically Inclined, Ceony is assigned an apprenticeship in paper magic despite her dreams of bespelling metal. And once she’s bonded to paper, that will be her only magic… forever.
Yet the spells Ceony learns under the strange yet kind Thane turn out to be more marvelous than she could have ever imagined — animating paper creatures, bringing stories to life via ghostly images, even reading fortunes. But as she discovers these wonders, Ceony also learns of the extraordinary dangers of forbidden magic.
An Excisioner — a practitioner of dark, flesh magic — invades the cottage and rips Thane’s heart from his chest. To save her teacher’s life, Ceony must face the evil magician and embark on an unbelievable adventure that will take her into the chambers of Thane’s still-beating heart—and reveal the very soul of the man.”

Oh you guys I really really disliked this book and that just bums me out! I don’t even know where to start with this book. So here’s the thing, this book was so freaking boring. The first 5 chapters were just pointless and then chapter 6 just ramps up ridiculously fast and it makes no sense! There is so little plot and character development. It’s like Ceony just instantly loves Emery without knowing why and then boom saves his life. It’s just ridiculous. The only reason this book got 3 stars from me was because of the adorable paper dog, Emery’s gentlemanly behavior, and the magic.

Emery: boring, Ceony: whiny and boring, Lira: are you serious? There’s no good reason for her to suddenly burst in on Emery and try to kill him. Like come on! This book honestly felt more like a sequel than a first book in a series. I just did not care about either of the characters. And most shocking of all for me, I did not care about the romance AT ALL! That’s just crazy to me because I live for romance. This book just felt like another cliche YA complete with non-diverse characters, a guy with green eyes, and best friend character more interesting than the main character. Where’s the originality? And OMG the use of metaphors is ridiculous, way too many annoying comparisons to food and other random crap. This book honestly both bored me and pissed me off. I’ve already started book two and so far it is marginally better. If you like typical YA and magical fantasy you’ll definitely like this book. But don’t expect anything mind blowing.

Oh my gosh it feels good to get all of the annoyance with this book out of my head. I’m done ranting now 😉

Thanks for reading guys! Talk to you soon! ❤ Adrianna
