My Favorite Classic Books

Hey lovely readers!

Today I want to talk to you about my favorite classic books.  But first, a quick note on what I consider classics. To me they are books that have a lasting presence through generations. They are representative of the culture and daily life during the periods in which they were written. Example: Harry Potter. And while my list consists solely of much older books, I consider many more modern books to be classics.

Now if you know me you know that classic literature is something I absolutely love. I especially love the great British writers the likes of Jane Austen,  Thomas Hardy, the Brontes, T.S. Eliot, and Ian McEwan among others. For me, reading is truly a passion. I connect with books, characters, and words so very deeply. And I hope that comes out in my reviews, how deeply books touch my soul. But classics are something special to me. They represent the deepest and most honest feelings in my heart. Their words are pure and honest and real. So here are 5 of my favorite classic books, windows to my soul ❤

The Color Purple by Alice Walker

color purple“Set in the deep American South between the wars, it is the tale of Celie, a young black girl born into poverty and segregation. Raped repeatedly by the man she calls ‘father’, she has two children taken away from her, is separated from her beloved sister Nettie and is trapped into an ugly marriage. But then she meets the glamorous Shug Avery, singer and magic-maker – a woman who has taken charge of her own destiny. Gradually, Celie discovers the power and joy of her own spirit, freeing her from her past and reuniting her with those she loves.”

This a story that truly sticks with you. In my daily life I think of it often and whenever someone asks for a book featuring a strong woman I always recommend this one. Celie is everything a woman could ever hope to be. She’s strong, she endures, she perseveres, she survives. And when all is said and done she comes out on the other side a truly beautiful person. This book makes you think, makes you question, but most of all it touches your heart.

Best quote:  “I am an expression of the divine, just like a peach is, just like a fish is. I have a right to be this way…I can’t apologize for that, nor can I change it, nor do I want to… We will never have to be other than who we are in order to be successful…We realize that we are as ourselves unlimited and our experiences valid. It is for the rest of the world to recognize this, if they choose.”

Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

17899948.jpg“Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again . . .

The novel begins in Monte Carlo, where our heroine is swept off her feet by the dashing widower Maxim de Winter and his sudden proposal of marriage. Orphaned and working as a lady’s maid, she can barely believe her luck. It is only when they arrive at his massive country estate that she realizes how large a shadow his late wife will cast over their lives–presenting her with a lingering evil that threatens to destroy their marriage from beyond the grave.”

Such an underrated book. I’m happy tough because I’ve seen this one on a few other blogs lately as a favorite 🙂  I really am surprised that more people don’t love this one, because it is truly unique. A Gothic romance/horror story, which is such an amazing combination. The story really keeps you on edge and to this day the ending still shocks me. The author does an excellent job of keeping you feeling unsettled through the whole story. Something brilliantly done by simply never giving the books protagonist a name.

Best quote:  “I believe there is a theory that men and women emerge finer and stronger after suffering, and that to advance in this or any world we must endure ordeal by fire.”

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë

wuthering heights“Emily Brontës only novel, Wuthering Heights remains one of literature’s most disturbing explorations into the dark side of romantic passion. Heathcliff and Cathy believe they’re destined to love each other forever, but when cruelty and snobbery separate them, their untamed emotions literally consume them.
Set amid the wild and stormy Yorkshire moors, Wuthering Heights, an unpolished and devastating epic of childhood playmates who grow into soul mates, is widely regarded as the most original tale of thwarted desire and heartbreak in the English language.”

The first of my two all time favorite classic books ❤ What I love about this book is that it is the definition of a twisted love story. It’s brutal and real and oh so heart-breaking. But the beauty of this book is wrapped up in the tragic beauty of it’s story. The only redeeming thing about Cathy and Heathcliff is how much they truly love each other. You hate them both and yet you admire them because they are so consumed with love for the other. It is a bit tough to read because of the way Heathcliff talks, but it’s so worth it. This story contains my two favorite literature quotes of all time. One of which is proudly  displayed on my bedroom wall ❤

Best quotes: “He’s more myself than I am. Whatever our souls are made of, his and mine are the same.”

““If all else perished, and he remained, I should still continue to be; and if all else remained, and he were annihilated, the universe would turn to a mighty stranger.”

Pride & Prejudice by Jane Austen

pride and prejudicePride and Prejudice–Austen’s own ‘darling child’–tells the story of fiercely independent Elizabeth Bennett, one of five sisters who must marry rich, as she confounds the arrogant, wealthy Mr. Darcy. What ensues is one of the most delightful and engrossingly readable courtships known to literature, written by a precocious Austen when she was just twenty-one years old.”

The second of my two favorite classics. And my favorite of all the Jane Austen novels. Elizabeth and Darcy will forever be the ultimate OTP ❤ What I love about this novel is that its all about independence for woman. Elizabeth is a strong female heroine and she’s someone I’ve always aspired to be like. She knows who she is and what she wants. She’s strong and opinionated and when she loves, she loves with everything she has. A beautiful and quiet love story with a truly powerful and resonant message ❤

Best quotes: “You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.”

“There are few people whom I really love, and still fewer of whom I think well. The more I see of the world, the more am I dissatisfied with it; and every day confirms my belief of the inconsistency of all human characters, and of the little dependence that can be placed on the appearance of merit or sense.”

Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

Little Women“Generations of readers young and old, male and female, have fallen in love with the March sisters of Louisa May Alcott’s most popular and enduring novel, Little Women. Here are talented tomboy and author-to-be Jo, tragically frail Beth, beautiful Meg, and romantic, spoiled Amy, united in their devotion to each other and their struggles to survive in New England during the Civil War.”

This book will always hold a special place in my heart, because  it’s the book that sparked my love of classics. My mom actually gave this to me when I was 12 years old. I was just struggling with life and she thought it might help me to read about young woman and some of their struggles ❤ This book deals with so much more than just girls and their crushes. It touches on love, loss, acceptance, and figuring out who you are on your own. Truly a great story.

Best quote: “There are many Beths in the world, shy and quiet, sitting in corners till needed, and living for others so cheerfully that no one sees the sacrifices till the little cricket on the hearth stops chirping, and the sweet, sunshiny presence vanishes, leaving silence and shadow behind.”

There’s five of my favorite classics, let me know what some of your favorites are!
