Hey lovely readers!
Here’s a book review for you! Re-posting, because this is a great spooky read!
“Long ago in England, and far away to the west…
In the dark heart of Fallen Woods, Darklin, a sixteen year old witch and her mother Gressyl, live hidden among the tangled trees. They are bound to a secret coven practicing dark and cruel magic. Darklin is taught to be merciless and to despise humanity, to believe that beauty is treacherous, and that love and kindness do not truly exist.
But when Darklin has a fateful encounter with a beautiful and kind hearted young man, powerful feelings are unleashed. As urges of attraction and destruction war inside Darklin’s heart, which urge will she give way to, and where will it lead her?”
So here’s the thing about this book. As soon as I saw that this book was about witches and set in historical England I was hooked. The story follows Darklin, a young witch in training who’s only object in life is to cause misery. Darklin lives her life only at night with her mother Gressyl. So I think I would classify this book as Young Adult with a bit of romance. But honestly it reads as very mature, especially because of the language used.
I really really liked this story and right from the beginning I found that I was captivated by Darklin’s story. It’s one that was so unexpected in that it really makes you question the world around you. Darklin is taught by Gressyl that all regular people are bad. That they do not deserve any happiness. The witches duty is to cast curses on the people live in the village of Fallen Oak. I will say that Darklin irritated me a bit in a few of the earlier chapters, because she took so much pleasure in hurting people. But the more I read, the more I realized that she acted that way because that was really all she knew. And the twist in the story was absolutely fantastic, though I couldn’t believe I didn’t see it coming!
The quiet and subtle romance in this way so great. It really helped to highlight the personal journey that Darklin makes throughout the story. The writing of the entire story was truly beautiful and lyrical. It added so much to the overall atmosphere of the book. I can’t wait to see more from this author and I dare you all not to fall in love with this story.
Thanks for reading guys! Talk to you soon! ❤ Adrianna
