Book Review – Kulti by Mariana Zapata

kulti“When the man you worshipped as a kid becomes your coach, it’s supposed to be the greatest thing in the world. Keywords: supposed to.
It didn’t take a week for 27-year-old Sal Casillas to wonder what she’d seen in the international soccer icon – why she’d ever had his posters on her wall or ever envisioned marrying him and having super-playing soccer babies.
Sal had long ago gotten over the worst non-break-up in the history of imaginary relationships with a man who hadn’t known she’d existed. So she isn’t prepared for this version of Reiner Kulti who shows up to her team’s season: a quiet, reclusive shadow of the explosive, passionate man he’d once been.”

Oh man this book was just so much fun. Mariana Zapata is just so good at writing these unconventional type romances. This one is no exception. The majority of the book is spent with the two main characters slowly developing a friendship. Only very close to the end do we get anything sexual or more than friendship. And I kind of love it.

It’s not like the books I normally read, which are filled with sex. No shame haha. Aside from that though, the story is just really interesting. I’ve hardly read any books centered on soccer and I love that this one focuses on female soccer. This is an insanely slow burn, but I think that’s what makes it so great. There is about a 13 year age gap between the characters, but watching their friendship develop was pretty amazing. It made complete sense and when things finally happened, it just felt so damn satisfying.

Really all of the relationships in this book were so well written. Aside from Kulti and Sal, I absolutely adored Sal’s relationship with her father. I feel like most romance books are so singularly focused on the relationship between the two main characters. And while this certainly isn’t a problem for me, it’s always nice to see how the main characters interact with their families and how those relationships affect the main relationship. And besides that, the pacing was fantastic. I was never bored or wishing something would happen. Even though this is a slow burn, it’s filled with great tension and small moments that are so so satisfying.

This was just an excellent and unique read all around. Definitely give a read for something more fun and lighthearted.
