Hey lovely readers!
I’m re-posting this one I did for Blogtober because I loved it so much! In case you didn’t know this about me, I absolutely love scary movies. Just an FYI, I enjoy more psychological horrors than outright gore. Okay, let’s get started.
“Paul and his older sister Regina try to settle into their new country home with their mother and father. But an atmosphere of dread slowly becomes evident in the house, and, before long, strange things are happening within its walls. As the supernatural occurrences get more intense and threatening, Regina looks into the house’s dark history and struggles to uncover the reason behind the macabre presence.”
I think this movie is so completely underrated. Plus I love Anna Paquin, so anything she’s in, I’m all over. So the synopsis gives you the basics of the movie, but my favorite thing about it? The underlying cause of the scary shit happening is this creepy cult. I don’t want to give anything away, but I will say that the twist at the end was brilliant and still keeps me up at night.
“After a serious car crash, novelist Paul Sheldon is rescued by former nurse Annie Wilkes, who claims to be his biggest fan. Annie brings him to her remote cabin to recover, where her obsession takes a dark turn when she discovers Sheldon is killing off her favorite character from his novels. As Sheldon devises plans for escape, Annie grows increasingly controlling, even violent, as she forces the author to shape his writing to suit her twisted fantasies.”
First of all if you don’t love this movie we are no longer friends 😉 No, but seriously this movie is so good. Annie is terrifying without even trying, because she’s just that crazy. I mean I first saw this was I was 11 I think, and to this day I still have trouble looking at Kathy Bates face. I love scary movies that are somewhat plausible, and this could totally happen.
“Grace, the devoutly religious mother of Anne and Nicholas, moves her family to the English coast during World War II. She awaits word on her missing husband while protecting her children from a rare photosensitivity disease that causes the sun to harm them. Anne claims she sees ghosts, Grace initially thinks the new servants are playing tricks but chilling events and visions make her believe something supernatural has occurred.”
This one’s so creepy and the scene where the daughter becomes possessed is still terrifying for me to watch. This is another one that I watched as a kid and its always stuck with me. I really never saw the ending coming, and every time I watch this movie it still manages to thrill me!
“Anarchy reigns when an unknown toxin turns the peaceful citizens of Ogden Marsh into bloodthirsty lunatics. In an effort to contain the spread of the infection, authorities blockade the town and use deadly force to keep anyone from getting in or out. Now trapped among killers, Sheriff Dutten (Timothy Olyphant) and his wife (Radha Mitchell) and two companions must band together to find a way out before madness and death overtake them.”
So this movie is brilliant on it’s own, but honestly it was the trailer that made me want to see it. The use of the song Mad World is so perfect! Anything where people go crazy totally does it for me, because I feel like it could totally happen. Plus the fact that these people are trapped in their own town, and no one wants to help them just freaks me out.
“After his wife meets a grisly end, Jamie Ashen returns to their creepy hometown of Ravens Fair to unravel the mystery of her murder. Once there, he discovers the legend of Mary Shaw, a murdered ventriloquist whose eerie presence still looms over the town. As he desperately digs for answers, Jamie encounters the curse that took his wife’s life and threatens his own.”
A movie about a crazy ventriloquist who haunts a town, yup enough said! This one’s a bit cheesy, but any movie that involves a curse, a creepy nursery rhyme, and dolls? I’m sold. I still love to watch this one every Halloween. You can find it on Starz.
“It sounds like just another urban legend — a videotape filled with nightmarish images leads to a phone call foretelling the viewer’s death in exactly seven days. Newspaper reporter Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts) is skeptical of the story until four teenagers all die mysteriously exactly one week after watching just such a tape. Allowing her investigative curiosity to get the better of her, Rachel tracks down the video and watches it. Now she has just seven days to unravel the mystery.”
I remember very clearly the first time I ever saw this movie. I was 12 and spending the night at a friends house. She had already seen the movie and wanted to show me a part of it, because it was so scary. She showed me the clip of the girl crawling out of the TV and I was like heck yes I want to watch the whole freaking thing. We did and then I promptly had my mom pick me up, because well, I was freaking terrified haha. Even now this movie gives me the creeps, though it is probably my second favorite scary movie ever. Though it would never happen in real life, it makes you feel so vulnerable. And lets be honest, the little girl is creepy as heck. If you’re feeling brave, check out the original Japanese version, Ringu. It gave me nightmares for weeks!
“When retiring police Detective William Somerset tackles a final case with the aid of newly transferred David Mills, they discover a number of elaborate and grizzly murders. They soon realize they are dealing with a serial killer (Kevin Spacey) who is targeting people he thinks represent one of the seven deadly sins. Somerset also befriends Mills’ wife, Tracy, who is pregnant and afraid to raise her child in the crime-riddled city.”
Alright so for this one, the synopsis pretty much covered it. But if you’re fascinated by serial killers like I am you need to see this movie. It’s truly amazing, and harsh, and beautiful, and so honest that it’s painful. It’s the kind of movie that makes you question the way you look at the world. And it’s on Netflix!
“After carefree teenager Jay sleeps with her new boyfriend, Hugh, for the first time, she learns that she is the latest recipient of a fatal curse that is passed from victim to victim via sexual intercourse. Death, Jay learns, will creep inexorably toward her as either a friend or a stranger. Jay’s friends don’t believe her seemingly paranoid ravings, until they too begin to see the phantom assassins and band together to help her flee or defend herself.”
The synopsis may not sound great. But I promise you that this is the most amazing movie you’ll ever see. I can legit say that this movie is like a work of art. I was captivated, I was shocked, I was unsettled. It’s brilliant and you all need to watch it now. You can find this one on Netflix.
“A young couple staying in an isolated vacation home are terrorized by three unknown assailants.”
Probably my favorite scary movie of all time. It’s terrifying, because it could happen to anyone, anywhere. These strangers are doing this simply because they can. There’s no rhyme or reason and that is scarier than anything else. They are asked several times why they are doing this and the answer is “Because you were home.” There’s very little dialogue and the movie takes place in a small setting. There’s very little blood and gore. It’s just three random people scaring this couple for the fun of it. This one’s on Amazon Prime!
“Photographer Adam Stanheight and oncologist Lawrence Gordon regain consciousness while chained to pipes at either end of a filthy bathroom. As the two men realize they’ve been trapped by a sadistic serial killer nicknamed “Jigsaw” and must complete his perverse puzzle to live.”
One of the best horror movies to ever exist, do not come at me. I grew up watching all of the classic scary movies, but this one sparked my love for “new age” horror. This movie still amazes me every time I watch it. The concept is fascinating and the twist at the end never fails to give me chills. The entire franchise amazes me with how it all ties together in the end. But the original will always be my very favorite. This one’s also available on Starz.
Thanks for reading guys! Talk to you soon! ❤ Adrianna
P.S. – Putting Se7en as number 7 on the list was not intentional haha!
