Book Review – Pretty Reckless (All Saints High #1) by L.J. Shen

Hey lovely readers!

Here’s a review for you. This one gave me a serious book hangover for like several weeks.

Pretty RecklessPenn
They say revenge is a dish best served cold.
I’d had four years to stew on what Daria Followhill did to me, and now my heart was completely iced. I took her first kiss. She took the only thing I loved.
I was poor. She was rich. The good thing about circumstances? They can change. Fast. Now, I’m her parents’ latest shiny project.
Her housemate. Her tormentor. The captain of the rival football team she hates so much. Yeah, baby girl, say it—I’m your foster brother.
There’s a price to pay for ruining the only good thing in my life, and she’s about to shell out some serious tears. Daria Followhill thinks she is THE queen. I’m about to prove to her that she’s nothing but a spoiled princess.

Daria
Everyone loves a good old unapologetic punk. But being a bitch? Oh, you get slammed for every snarky comment, cynical eye roll, and foot you put in your adversaries’ way. The thing about stiletto heels is that they make a hell of a dent when you walk all over the people who try to hurt you.
In Penn Scully’s case, I pierced his heart until he bled out, then left it in a trash can on a bright summer day. Four years ago, he asked me to save all my firsts for him.
Now he lives across the hall, and I want nothing more than to be his last everything. His parting words when he gave me his heart were that nothing in this world is free. Now? Now he is making me pay.”

L.J. Shen is one of those romance authors that every romance reader knows. Her books are everywhere and they’re very popular. Sometimes with authors like that you have to wonder: Are their books that good? Or over-hyped? But then you read a book like this and you know exactly why her books are so loved, because this book was so freaking amazing! It’s not at all what you expect it to be and it was everything I never knew I wanted it to be. ❤ Powerful, emotional, and a beautiful love story.

Penn and Daria met years earlier and share a secret that changed both of their lives. It’s the kind of change you don’t  notice from the outside and because of this no one sees how much these two are alike. The only ones who understand them are each other and yet they can’t admit their real feelings. I found both of these characters to be so beautifully written, they have a truly amazing emotional depth. I truly expected your typical high school bully romance and what we were given was so much more. I expected to hate Daria and only see Penn’s side of things. But Daria, she really snuck into my heart. Something that occurred to me after I finished the book was that Daria’s character gave me such strong Brooke Davis vibes. Any One Tree Hill fans here? 🙂 Seriously if you love Brooke Davis you have to read this book.

I found Daria’s relationship with her parents so realistic. As someone who has a tough relationship with my dad that is similar to Daria’s relationship with her mother I loved getting that perspective in a story. All of the relationship dynamics in this book were so well done. Penn’s relationships with all of the characters were not at all what I expected and honestly that boy stole my heart ❤ This book was just so well written, complex, and captivating. Truly one of L.J. Shen’s best works. I 1000% recommend this one!

Thanks for reading guys! Talk to you soon! ❤ Adrianna

My name is Adrianna. I'm a 26 year old wife, book lover, and librarian. I have a deep love for books and an unhealthy obsession with iced tea! I can quote almost any Disney movie, Belle is my favorite Disney princess, and I live for Harry Potter! I enjoy reading New Adult Romance above anything else. I have 5 cats and 1 dog who are basically my world (along with hubby of course)! And when I'm not reading I enjoy writing, puzzling, trivia, and long walks with the hubs and dog! Thank you for visiting and I hope you enjoy!
